et every instrument be tuned for praise!
Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise!
And may God give us faith to sing always. Alleluia!
(from When in our music God is glorified by Fred Pratt Green)
Be it spirited congregational singing or inspired, high-quality ensemble performance, music is important to our life of communal praise and prayer at St. Bartholomew's.
This is reflected in the opportunities for serving in a musical capacity as well as concert offerings to the parish and larger community:
Children and Youth Choirs (Grades K through 8)
The Children's Choirs at St. Bartholomew's allow children to learn to worship God through the power of music, to let them use their gifts for the ministry of the church, and to experience the joy of creatively and artistically communicating the gospel of Christ. Through music, children's choir is an excellent opportunity for Christian education. This choir sings about once a month. Rehearsals are on Sundays at 12:15 p.m., September through May.
The St. Bartholomew Choir (Youth and adults)
This ensemble is the main musical leadership at St. Bartholomew's 10:30 service, September through mid-June. Stylistic variety is important for the selection of anthems: Anglican chant, baroque, contemporary, and Mendelssohn to motets, all with or without instrumental accompaniment. New members are always welcome, regardless of experience, and short-term participation opportunities are offered. The biggest requirement is the willingness to work! Rehearsals are Thursday evenings.
Summer Choir (Youth and adults)
During the summer months, this choir rehearses at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays and sings for 10:30 service immediately following. Singers are welcome to participate for as few or as many summer Sundays they can!
Handbell Choir (Youth and adults)
This group meets weekly to rehearse and occasionally plays for worship. Regardless of experience, the ability to read music is essential.
The regular use of instruments other than the organ is a vital part of the worship experience at St. Bartholomew's. Instruments recently in use include the flute, violin, and brass.
Friends of music
Opportunities abound to support music at St. Bartholomew's. Be it maintaining vestments and other equipment to logistical support for special music events (such as ushering, program publishing, publicity), anyone with a passion for music and a desire to offer non-musical support is encouraged to make their interests known!
